Overview
The Tacking Point Tavern project comprised of the complete refurbishment & extension of the existing and operational Tavern. Works were undertaken on 2 levels, The lower level; bottle shop, cool/keg rooms, storage and plant. The Upper level; Main tavern, sports bar, gaming room, beer garden, dining and function centre, children’s play area with Rhino pay equipment and new kitchen facilities. The overall project was handed over in early December 2017 which allowed our client to take advantage of the Christmas season trade.
This project is a success due to the dedication of the design and construction teams to ensure that the architectural intent was executed to allow the facility to be enjoyed by the growing Port Macquarie community.

Project staging
key to Success
Staging for the project was key to ensuring that the Tavern was able to continue to trade while construction works were being undertaken. Working in with our client, further milestones were introduced to bring revenue centres online sooner, this posed some tight constraints on work zones and accompanying new design changes and multiple latent conditions. Our team delivered the new project on schedule despite the new structural designs required.
Safety was a high focus on the project due to upper floor works being undertaken above the lower level bottle shop drive-through. Hoardings & temporary walkways were constructed to maintain safe access for patrons.
Working closely with clients to deliver successful outcomes
Features of the Tavern include the white external aluminium screens to the gaming room which assist with deflecting heat and retaining internal room temperatures for patrons while giving the building a unique look. Also of interest is the children’s play equipment which protrudes through the building over the top-level car park giving children a helicopter view.
Throughout the project, Lipman and its subcontractors were able to provide innovative alternative solutions to latent conditions that would have required a change to the original intent had these solutions not been implemented. While working in with our engineer we were able to remove structural steel beams which would have impacted kitchen mechanical hoods and lowered the ceiling height, as an alternative extensive bracing & additional members were introduced into the trusses to enable the existing roof to span over the entire kitchen.
